Winning the Future

I. Departure

“Hey! Honey, wait for me!” Wei Wei was busy taking down boxes of luggage from the taxi, while shouting loudly at the young girl who was running towards the entrance of the spaceport.

The setting sun at dusk drained the sky full of clouds and the glass walls of the magnificent harbor building into a brilliant red.

Wei Wei and the others settled their luggage and walked to the marquee to wait to board the ship. New Hong Kong had the largest spaceport in the Asian region, and it was also the most advanced. It was one of the metropolises that had reverted back early after the Star Wars.

(Note: At the beginning of the twenty-third century, there was a war between Earth and the colonized planets. The two of them looked through the transparent alloy curtain wall at the huge spacecraft on the tarmac. The crew was busy with the final preparations for takeoff, and underneath the endless sky, the silver-white ship was illuminated by dazzling lights.

Thirty minutes to go and they would be leaving Earth for the first time. They held hands and felt the excitement in each other’s hearts.

“It’s you again!” How could that sharp and loud voice be so familiar? Wei Wei and the others hurriedly turned around, who else could it be if not that fat woman?

He and Honey looked at each other and smiled bitterly, and hurriedly stood up to give their seats to the fat woman.

“What?” The crowd’s attention was immediately focused on the screen of the stereo TV.

Xin Xin felt a blackness in her eyes and also fainted in Wei Wei’s arms.

II. Detention

“How is Xin Xin?” Wei Wei asked with concern when he saw Honey come out of her room.

The next two days were very sad.

Restricted by the captain, they were confined to the suite. All the ideas they came up with to comfort Xin Xin didn’t work; instead, they were all let down by Xin Xin’s sadness. Everyone looked sad. She just sat there, staring blankly at her mother’s pearl necklace, unknowingly dripping tears. People who saw her were really saddened by her heart.

Xinxin was so sad that she couldn’t even eat, only Wei Wei could persuade her. Several times she cried herself to sleep in Wei Wei’s arms. She seems to be leaning on Wei Wei. But she was still not jealous; she also thoughtfully said to Wei Wei: “Hey, hey, Xin Xin is really too poor, we have to be a little bit better to her.”

It was hard to wait until we landed on Mars.

The space ship had just come to a stop, and the Cosmic Patrol was already waiting. Two officers wearing neat uniforms and with a very powerful appearance hurriedly boarded the ship. The officer in front turned around and said, “Stop messing around and get in the car!”

It’s probably the best arrangement for them.
